From Swiss life to Pura Vida in Costa Rica
My name is Tatiana. I am Swiss with Russian roots, 44 years old, and my life took an unexpected turn the day my journey led me to Costa Rica.
🎒 Love at first sight, backpacker style (2015)
After eight months of traveling around the world, I landed in San José in 2015, with my backpack and an open heart. I had the joyful naivety to believe that a year of Spanish learned at age 20 would be enough to converse with the locals. Let's just say the reality check was instant 😅! But instead of stopping, I took intensive classes and dove headfirst into this new adventure.
🐋 Breathtaking, untouched nature
The journey quickly led me to Corcovado National Park via Drake Bay. After a very long day of driving and boating, the reward was immense. It was whale season, and they were waiting for me right there at the entrance of the park. In just a three-hour hike, Corcovado revealed its treasures: howler monkeys, spider monkeys, white-faced capuchins, a tapir, snakes, and birds of a thousand colors... A wild, raw world that leaves you speechless.
My phone fell into a waterfall that year. All my photos vanished. But the memories remained untouched and vibrant.
🚲 In search of my sanctuary
My exploration continued: Uvita and its pristine beaches, Manuel Antonio, Liberia, and then Tamarindo for a ten-day break with a friend. I remember the touching solidarity of the locals during the drought, leaving buckets of water for the monkeys along the shore.
After the adrenaline of rafting on the Rio Sarapiquí in La Fortuna and the misty cloud forests of Monteverde, I finally discovered the Caribbean coast. Puerto Viejo, which was supposed to be just a stopover, became my sanctuary. I spent three months there on a bicycle, riding between black, golden, and white sand beaches, immersed in Afro-descendant cultures and indigenous traditions. In Cahuita, surrounded by this lush nature and gentle rhythm, I lived the Pura Vida to the fullest. I knew right then that this country had chosen me.
🏡 Making Costa Rica my home
In 2016, I returned to settle down for good. Costa Rica became my home, and my daughter was born here.
Life brought us back to Switzerland until 2022, but the calling of this country was just too strong. In April, I packed two suitcases, took my daughter by the hand, and we came back. Today, I am living my life here to the fullest. I bought a piece of land, built my own house, and two others to rent out. A new life—simple, meaningful, and rich."

My adventure doesn’t stop here. Today, I want to share this unique experience with other women. I want to show them the country that welcomed me, let them discover its hidden landscapes, its gentleness, its colors, and its authentic encounters. And above all, I want to keep rediscovering it through their eyes.
